Il Palazzo Reale  - The Royal Palace 

At the entry to the Royal Palace, on the backs of two restless horses there are two characters Castor and Pollux, the inseparable brothers of Greek and Latin mythology. They are specular but not identical and once more represent the double – good and evil – co-existing in Turin. They are on horseback and Cavalry was  the Corps that enjoyed especial prestige in the House of Savoy’s Army.

They were  twin brothers, together known as the Dioskouri, sons of Leda and Zeus. According to some legends Castor was the mortal son of Tyndareus, the king of Sparta while Pollux was the divine son of Zeus, who seduced Leda in the guise of a swan. Though accounts of their birth are varied, they are sometimes said to have been born from an egg, along with their twin sisters and half-sisters Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.

Due statue equestri sono all’ingresso del palazzo Reale a Torino. Sono Castore e Polluce gli inseparabili Dioscuri della mitologia greca e romana in groppa a irrequieti cavalli. Non sono identici e rappresentano ancora una volta il duplice volto di Torino. Il fatto che siano a cavallo potrebbe l’importanza della Cavalleria, arma che ebbe speciale prestigio nell’esercito sabaudo.

Secondo alcuni autori erano i figli gemelli di Zeus e di Leda, conosciuti soprattutto come i Diòscuri, ossia "figli di Zeus"; altri affermano che i due gemelli avrebbero avuto origine da Tindaro, re di Sparta, avendo come sorella Elena, oggetto della contesa a Troia. Infine alcune leggende sostengono che Castore fosse il mortale figlio di Tindaro, mentre Polluce fosse nato da Zeus che aveva sedotto Leda trasformandosi in un cigno.

Turin is not only famous  for its monuments....Maybe few people know that La Mandria Regional Park, in the communes of Venaria Reale and Druento, is the largest enclosed park in Europe, with a surface of some 3,000 hectares. The wall that surrounds it, was built in mid-19th century by Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia, who had moved into the castle here (the Borgo Castello),  Its fauna includes wild boars and reindeers.

Non solo monumenti....Torino vanta anche La Mandria,  un Parco Regionale situato nei comuni di Venaria e Druento vicino a Torino. che è il più vasto parco circoscritto d'Europa con una superficie si 3.000 ettari. Il muro che lo circonda fu fatto costruire da Vittorio Emanuele II di Sardegna che aveva trasferito la sua residenza reale nel Borgo del castello per la sua sposa morganatica Rosa Vercellana. La sua fauna include renne e cinghiali.

Giuseppe Culicchia (Turin, 1965) has always liked writing and started creating stories at Palazzo Nuovo, Turin University. He worked as assistant librarian in London and, back in Turin, in book shops. In 1994, his first best seller Tutti giù per Terra was published and then  adapted for the cinema by Davide Ferrario, starring Valerio Mastandrea (1997). He loves translating American classics like Mark Twain and Francis Scott Fitzgerald.

Giuseppe Culicchia (Torino 1965) ha sempre amato scrivere. Già all'università creava storie e ha continuato a scrivere durante il periodo trascorso a Londra come assistente bibliotecario e poi di nuovo a Torino come magazziniere o commesso in vari negozi di libri. Il suo primo best seller è stato pubblicato  nel 1994  Tutti giù per Terra, adattato per il cinema nel 1997 dal regista Davide Ferrario con Valerio Mastandrea nel cast. Ama tradurre i classici americani come Mark Twain e Francis Scott Fitzgerald.

visita: the Archaeological Museum in Turin

The Archaeological Museum of Turin dates back to the 16th century thanks to Emanulele Filiberto’s collections. The seat has changed during the centuries and  the works of art have increased. In 1940 the collections were moved to the Greenhouses of Palazzo Reale where they are nowadays, However, a new location is going to be set up in the subterranean of the New Wing of Palazzo Reale.

Il museo risale alla metà del 1500 grazie alle raccolte di Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia. La sede delle collezioni e il numero delle opere sono variati nel corso dei secoli, Nel 1940, con la definitiva separazione dal Museo Egizio, nasce il nuovo Museo di Antichità, ora  nelle Serre di palazzo Reale,  ma prossimamente verranno allestite delle sale nel piano sotterraneo della Manica Nuova di Palazzo Reale.
