Tutti gli abitanti della elegante casa di Road Hill House in Wiltshire sono interrogati e dall’inchiesta emergono i particolari di una famiglia in apparenza inattaccabile: figli ribelli, tresche clandestine, solitudine, pazzia, gelosia e servitù intrigante. Il mistero s’infittisce e viene chiamato un detective di Londra, un giovane promettente, Jonathan Whicher, che già si era fatto notare in precedenza per il suo acume.
