visita: hangmen and idioms

Many idioms date back to the  Napoleonic period. Until 1863, the convicted were hanged in a square called Rondò della Forca (Circle of the Gallows); others were guillotined in Piazza Carlina (Carlina Square)  - ironically called “Place de la Liberté” (Freedom Square), whereas in Piazza Castello (Castle Square ) and in Piazza San Carlo (Saint Charles Square) they were burnt at the stake or dismembered. The population hated the executioners as they were very well paid to kill. So they started swearing using the expression  boia faus, in English damned hangman

visita: Nietzsche in Turin

In Turin, at 6, Via Carlo Alberto, on the corner of the square,  Friederich Nietzsche lived for a brief period, from 5th April to 5 June 1888 and the first months of the following year. It was in Turin that  the German philosppher wrote Ecce homo. He loved the city and  descibed it as  severe and elegant. The philosopher  wrote to his friend Peter Gast that he could work, eat and sleep in Turin ...the air gave him energy. Unfortunately it was just in the piedmontese capital  that Nietzsche showed the first signs of his insanity: when he saw a coachman beating his horse, he insulted him and embraced and kissed the animal. While  taken home Nietzsche cried and shouted he was God; afterwards his friend Overbeckper accompanied him to Basilea to be cured.

Visita- the temple of the cinema

 Per la Versione Italiana
The MOLOCH
The  Mole Antonelliana also hosts  The National Cinema Museum  which  is unique in the world  as it offers objects which made  the history of photography, artifacts of the  pre-cinema era and  a panoramic view of the technical, scientific and artistic paths that led to the birth of cinema together with different scientific and educational activities. The idea for the National Cinema Museum was conceived in 1941 when Maria Adriana Prolo planned the creation of a space totally dedicated to the documentation of Torino’s film industry. First opened in Palazzo Chiablese, a wing of the Royal Palace, was closed in 1985 for safety reasons,  and riopened in 2000 inside the Mole Antonelliana, The  Swiss set designer François Confino who has arranged the various halls said that the  museum  is  “[...] a temple of cinema in a place of exceptional architectural caliber, a conspiratorial and inviting tribute to the Mole Antonelliana."

Museum of the Cinema - inside

Visita- Il Santo Graal

Per la Versione Italiana

The Saint Grail
land the Knights of the Round Table

Turin is also the city of White Magic: it is the place where there is the Holy Sindone, the shroud which wrapped Christ's body in his sepulchre. It is said that Christ's relics are all together. If this is true, in Turin there is also the Saint Grail, the cup in which Christ drank during his last supper and Giovanni D’Arimatea collected his holy blood after Christ’s deposition.

Two statues would testify this theory, the ones which stand on both sides of the steps of the Gran Madre, the large church built on the river Po's banks. The one on the right represents Religion and the other on the left Faith. Faith is holding a chalice which some believe to be a reference to the Holy Grail,. According to some stories the Grail could be buried nearby, some others maintain that the statue itself is looking at the place where the cup is hidden – but the eyes of Faith have no pupils.

Christ during his last supper

Go to our Catalogue for Ebooks and Stories

Go to our Catalogue for Ebooks and Stories

Visita- Nostradamus a Torino?

Per la Versione Italiana

Nostradamus

Maybe it is not well know that Nostradamus spent a period in Turin in 1556. He was probably called by Emanuele Filiberto from Savoy to help his wife have a baby. Nostadamus was said to be able to prepare a miraculous oil to cure sterility. He stayed in a fine villa outside the city, La Vittoria, later named Il Morozzo,  where  a commemorative stone was then found with the words:

1556/ Nostradamus lived here, where there is Paradise, Hell and Purgatory. My name is Victoria; who gives me honour, will get glory, who blames me, will be ruined

Nostradamus predicted the birth of the Duke’s heir but also the date of his death “when 9 will be before a 7”: Carlo Emanuele died just before his 70th birthday. But mystics state that Nostradmus came to Turin attracted by the famous alchemic caves. Besides, as stories go, in 1556 there was a great meeting of  the Priory of Sion, and Michael Nostradamus was its Great Monarch.

Michael Nostradamus and his prophecies

    Nostre Damus a loge ici
On il ha le paradis lenfer
     Le purgatoire ie ma pelle
      La victoire qvi mhonore
     Avrala gloire qvi me
    Meprise ovra la
    Rvine hntiere

laNOTTE- Diabolik in Turin

Per la Versione Italiana

Diabolik's eyes

What people really do not know is that Turin has a negative record - it is the city with the largest number of unsolved women's murders.
And  it is Turin itself the place where the story of Diabolik was born: a man murdered a young worker and challenged the police naming himself Diabolich (without K).

Go to our Catalogue for Ebooks and Stories

It was Tuesday, February 25th, 1958, and the victim was a Fiat worker aged twenty seven, Mario Giliberti. he was found bloodless in the back of a shoemaker's shop at 20, Via Fontanesi. The weapon and the murderer were never found. There was a note on a wardrobe knocker: "You'll find the killer...".
The young man came from the South of Italy, she was engaged with a girl from Lodi where he had done his military service. In his poor room there was a lot of money, probably coming from a robbery or a usurer. The murderer provoked the police first with an anonimous call, then with a letter revealing the motive of the criminal action: revenge. But not much more.

Go to our Catalogue for Ebooks and Stories

People started their chase and the investigations led to a comrade in arms of Giliberti - but the clues were not enough and he was soon set free.
In the  novel inspired by the case,
Uccidevano di notte, by Italo Fasan, Diabolic (without h or k) was a poor actor, who, at the end of his life, had decided to take the law into his own hands. Only after four years the name of Diabolik appeared on the comic stip written and published by two wealthy sisters from Milan, Angela and Luciana Giussani - the creators of the diabolic robber.

Versione Italiana

Diabolik and Eva

Go to our Catalogue for Ebooks and Stories

Visita- where the devil lives

Per la Versione Italiana

Lucifer

What about Black Magic in Turin? Lucifer fell down from the Heaven because of his vanity. In Turin Lucifer is represented in a monument in Piazza Statuto . The square is the westerly point of Roman Turin. In the centre there is the angel topped monument , a heap of scattered rocks with white figures which celebrates the workers who built the Frejus tunnel through the Alps. For people in Turin its meaning is deeper: it is the ‘black heart’ of the city.

Go to our Catalogue for Ebooks and Stories

The gloomy reputation of the square dates back to the Romans who believed that the west, where the sun sets, was the meeting point of light and dark, good and evil. So they chose this spot, the vallis occisorum, as a place for executions and to bury their dead. The remains of their cemetery lie deep beneath your feet.

The metaphysical painter Giorgio de Chirico came to Turin in a period in which he felt Nietzsche’s philosophy influence, and he described the city as the town that has “…a ghostly and metaphysical aspect that only a few individuals can see in moments of clairvoyance and metaphysical abstraction.”

Statue in Piazza Statuto

atNIGHT- Who created the Detective Story?

Per la Versione Italiana

Cover of the novel
The Notting Hill Mystery

The Gothic novel started the mystery genre, but who was the first detective story writer? Most critics state that he was Edgar Allan Poe whose fertile imagination created inspector August Dupin. T. S. Eliot, poet and critic, supports that the first was instead Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens' close friend and author of The Moonstone.

As a matter of fact, a test which dealt with mystery and detection had already appeared in installments on the magazine Once a Week (Edited by C. Dickens) on December 27, 1862, The Notting Hill Mystery. The author was unknown as the novel was written under pseudonymous. It was supposed to be Charles Warren Adams (1833-1903), a lawyer, author of mysterious stories.
Illustration of the Novel
on the magazine once a Week

The Notting Hill Mystery is about the adventures of an insurance agent, Ralph Henderson, who must investigate on Baron R suspected of his wife's murder. She died after drinking an acid taken from his husband's laboratory. The Baron is surely involved, but he evidences are not found. While investigating, the agent discovers other murders, all of them seem to have the Baron's mark. The truth will be unveiled thanks to letters, sheets of diaries, maps of the murder scene: techniques now quite familiar, but very unusual for the Victorian readers. The novel, forgotten for a long period, had now been published again on its 150th anniversary.

La rivista
 Once a Week

laNOTTE- Road House's secrets

Per la Versione Italiana

Road Hill House

The cover of the novel

To investigate the crime is called the greatest detective in the country, Inspector Jonathan Whicher. According to him, the guilty party is Constance, the plain, gloomy, teenage half-sister of little Saville Kent. And he is right, but the public opinion uproars in bewilderment and destroys the career of the detective. Five years later the girl confesses her crime, becoming one of the best-known names in England. As to Inspector Jonathan Whicher, heis still living on in fiction, as his figure has been an example for the all-knowing and all-seeing detectives nature loving such as Wilkie Collins’s Sgt. Cuff in The Moonstone, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, Dashiell Hammett’s Sam Spade and Rex Stout’s Nero Wolf.

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher reads like the best of Victorian thrillers; Kate Summerscale has revived the mystery of Road Hill House depicting not only a crime, but the atmosphere of the period, the curiosity and the involvement of the English people, the attraction for what is criminal and macabre and the middle class society beyond the elegant and respectable façade - scheming servants, rebellious children, insanity jealousy, and hatred.

Omicidio a Road Hill House.
